What is natural?

It seems to me the most "natural" thing in the world is an animal who tries to manipulate its environment to get what it wants. After all, it's how they survive. That same animal will also look for ways to avoid what it doesn't want. The former activates a mindset of creativity based on seeking a good thing; the latter activates a mindset based on retreat from something undesirable.

So as a trainer, I think it is a worthy goal to make my horse think I am a totally fascinating because I keep finding ways for him to get what he wants. The challenge on my part is to set it up so he guesses what I want. THAT is where the click comes in, it adds precision and helps the horse guess more quickly. I like that and I know the horses like that!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

The word respect is a human invention. It's purpose and use is to elicit a group of feelings that include power, authority, boundaries, value and whatever else the listener associates with the word.

Horses don't know diddley about the word respect OR it's human interpretations.  If you want to be a good trainer with your horse forget the word respect and focus on what you want in terms of PHYSICAL actions.  Do you want your horse to stop within 2 feet of you? Then train that.

As a trainer my goal is to give my horse clear cues or signals. What I want from my horse is an effort to figure out what I want because he WANTS to. That's good horse training.
